I love overseas travel. Some of my happiest memories are of exploring laneways in exotic cities, eating local cuisine, visiting cultural sites and enjoying the great outdoors.

Celebrating Heritage Day

We have been celebrating Heritage Day. Heritage Day honours the work of our founding members who helped establish the school 60 Years ago.

Secondary students heard from Ineke Laning, former parent, teacher and Principal who told a number of interesting stories from the early days of the school. Films featuring school founding members Piet Verdouw and Ali Stam were also shown. You can find out more about our 60 Year Anniversary by visiting the Calvin website.

The Primary Campus Heritage Day event will be held on 1 September with guest speakers, Jeltje Verdouw and Janet Vanderwal, both former teachers and current Gold Association members. Last week we held a celebration with students from the Primary Campus. Bonny Moroni our Head of Secondary shared some special stories about how Calvin was founded and the money raised to build the school.

Year 4 Excursion - Bonorong Wildlife Park

Last week Year 4s went to Bonorong Wildlife Park to visit the Tassie Devils after reading the book Devils in Danger. They saw the Tassie Devils, learnt more about them and visited other wildlife as well.

Book Week 2022

It is not long until Book Week where we will celebrate our enjoyment of books with our annual Book parade and a new event called “Reading in Bed is Terrific” day.

On Monday 22 August students come along dressed up as a character from their favourite book, or write their own book, and come dressed as that! Parents are invited to join us for the parade on the oval at 9.15am.

Our new “Reading in Bed is Terrific” day will be on Thursday 25 August and students may wear their pyjamas to school. Each class will have a special library time with extra reading, and hot chocolate (dairy free option available).

We're excited to invite the Calvin community to two evenings of Arts Performance. There will be a wide-ranging program of Drama and Music items from an assortment of ensembles. The performances will immediately follow the annual Performing Arts Camp that allows for an intensive rehearsal period as well as developing a great sense of collegiality and community.

The Year 9 Drama Class will present on THURSDAY night and the Student Theatre Company on FRIDAY. We warmly invite family and friends, as well as the wider Calvin Community, to enjoy the fruits of their labours!

This is a free un-ticketed event to be held in the Multipurpose Hall on the Calvin Primary Campus.

Come and hear guest speaker, Daniel Sih, provide insights on how to raise healthy teens in the digital age. He'll be answering questions like:

• When should I get my child a smartphone?

• How do I guide their digital habits?

• What can I do to help them enjoy life away from a screen? And lots more!

Daniel has 15 years of experience working in senior leadership and strategic consulting roles across Australia and the UK. We'd love to see you there! The event will be held on 23 August from 7.00pm to 9.00pm in the Multi Purpose Hall on the Primary Campus.

Salvos Sleepover

This year, our Year 11 and 12 students are partnering with the Salvation Army on their annual Sleep Out to raise funds and awareness for homelessness here in Tasmania.

Many of the students are sleeping rough here at school for one night to experience what it might feel like to spend the night outdoors on concrete and then having to go to school the next day and pretend everything is fine.

Please consider donating to the Salvos by sponsoring our school team or an individual student/teacher.

Sofa to 6km Run

On FRIDAY eleven students participated in the 'Sofa to 6km', an exercise challenge and fundraiser to raise funds for Jeans for Genes Australia. The funds raised will help the scientists at Children’s Medical research Institute to find cures for genetic diseases.
