Year 3 News

On Thursday 17 and Friday 18 March Year 3 had their Day Camp to Blue Lagoon Christian Camp. Students enjoyed completing activities such as archery, cooking damper on a firepit,

crate climbing, participating in the 'Big Dipper' swing, swimming at the beach, indoor rock climbing, and team building challenges.

"My favourite activity was when we did the big dipper because I was the first one to go to the top. " - Lori

"My favourite memory of camp is the ice-cream and chocolate and milo and 100,000 sprinkles! It was the best days of my life, it was the best. My favourite activity while being at camp was rock climbing and I got to the top on the middle rock climb." Thomas

"My favourite memory of camp was when we roasted marshmallows and damper and made s'mores! And then we ate them and they were so yummy! " - Zara

Creativity and Satisfaction: A blessing shared between the campuses

Recently our Year 10-12 students have been working to bless the primary students by creating handmade repurposed garden beds for the kinder and prep classes and some animal protection for the Year 1 vegetable bed.

The beds were created using recycled signage which was cut and shaped, repurposed and painted (in Calvin colours of course). A wooden frame was created by the students who then bent the plastic into the desired shape, using rivets to hold it in shape.These wonderful students commented on how satisfying it was to put their creations into place, amidst a backdrop of eager young vegetable growers.

A great big Thankyou to Amy, Anna, Georgie, Ollie, Zac, Jeremy, Daniella, Tilli, Imogen, Joe and, of course, to Mr Boonstra and Mrs Conry for their can do attitude and enthusiasm. We also wish to thank the Woolworths Junior Landcare Team for their support in helping equip our school for a future of growing, tasting and learning.

Little Learners our free play-based early learning program, is back for two more fun outdoor sessions until the end of Term. There is no need to RSVP to these two sessions just turn up! We'd love to see you there!

Kingston Beach. We will meet at the Playground to say hello to Country, followed by a story-time and a shell hunt.

7 April 9.30-10.30am
Dru Point Playground and bush play. We will meet outside the main Playground gate (under the rainbow) to say hello to Country and collect some nature treasures, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt.

Newcomers are also always welcome to attend our regular 'Out and About' sessions. Details of these always appear on the Calvin Calendar.

SECONDARY NEWS

Science and Engineering Challenge

Congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 Science and Engineering team that won the Southern Tasmanian final at UTAS today! The team of 26 students competed against seven other local schools in a variety of problem solving challenges, including bridge building using balsa wood, sending messages using LED lights, constructing a water turbine out of styrofoam and paddle pop sticks, and building an earthquake-proof tower.

The Calvin team will now compete in the state finals in Launceston on 11 April, under the leadership of Calvin staff Phil Banham, Annalé van Heerden and KinOn Li.

The Science and Engineering Challenge, run in conjunction with The University of Newcastle, helps Year 9 and 10 students to foster their interest in STEM, with the hope that more students will consider future careers in these areas.

Pathways Central News

Our Pathways Coordinator Carly Brouwer would love to hear from Parents and Students from Year 10 and 11 particularly if they are unsure of their future pathway and transition to employment.

Athletics Carnival

On Monday we had our athletics carnival. Westminster has dominated this event over the past 6 years, but change was in the air and hope was forming in Geneva and Wittenberg that they could be the House to topple the champion.

Participation amongst students was high, with events filling up quickly and students being active throughout the day.

Several records fell thanks to Matilda Lange and Gabby Hay. Matilda smashed the javelin record by over 10 metres and also broke the discus, 200 metre and 400 metre records. Gabby Hay broke the triple jump, javelin and 200 metre records.

The vibe was excellent on the day, with students genuinely celebrating with each other and had a real spirit of encouragement. Wittenberg winning the mascot race proved to be an omen for the day, with Wittenberg breaking their drought of success winning their first athletics carnival in nearly a decade. Final scores:

Westminster 1247 points
Geneva 1211 points

House captains help at carnivals and will be an integral part of our intra-school sports cup that will be played in 2022. This was their first event for the year, they did a great job! Our House captains for 2022 are:

Geneva - Isabel Weiley and Nathan de Puit
Westminster - Riley Haas and Amy Ramsden
Wittenberg - Sheridan Hay and Joe Ojwiya

Lose Your Locks

Hamish Verdouw in Year 12 will be shaving off his hair next Friday 8 April outside the Common Room at lunchtime. While he will miss his long locks, Hamish has decided to support the Kids' cancer project by participating in the "Lose your Locks" fundraising campaign. Help support Hamish by making a donation. Student Council members will be collecting donations on the day as well. We are behind you all the way, Hamish!

Elevate - Time Management and Exam Techniques

We are excited to welcome the team from Elevate Education to Calvin again this year! Our Year 10, 11 and 12 students will join in sessions led by Elevate on Thursday 7 April. This year Elevate will be working with our students on study skills, exam techniques and time management. These programs are designed specifically for students preparing for the final years of high school and are delivered by vibrant, engaging presenters.

Digital Thumbprint Sessions

Secondary students took part in workshops last week aimed at encouraging digital safety. Year 7 students learned about digital security and were taught how to create a strong password to avoid hacking of accounts. Years 8 and 9 were presented with examples of cyberbullying and encouraged to avoid being a bystander when negative information is posted online. Years 10, 11 and 12 were asked to examine their social media profiles and posts through the lens a boss applies in the process of hiring and during employment.
