On 1 February 2024, a significant figure in the life of Calvin Christian School, Mr Bob Van Veen went to be with the Lord. Bob was Principal of Calvin Christian School in the 1980s, from 1984 to 1990, and had a commitment to Christian education that had impact across the nation. Having emigrated from the Netherlands in the 1950s, Bob undertook theological and teacher training. He was later invited to start two Christian schools, Marantha Christian School in Victoria in 1970 and Genesis Christian College in 1991 (after concluding his time at Calvin).

For those who worked with Mr Van Veen or were students at the time, Bob was characterised by a deep love of the Lord, a gentle attitude and approach. He was approachable to all and earnt the respect of parents, students and staff. During his years of service, Calvin Christian School grew. It was Bob who encouraged the Board and Association to launch a new venture, introducing Years 11 and 12 to Calvin in 1990. In many respects, Bob’s legacy of faith and development of our educational offerings continue at Calvin to this day.

In 1989 Bob wrote these words in the annual school magazine, a reflection of his faith and vision for Calvin Christian School: “Whatever you are going to do ask God to make your work or study so important to you that you sense that you are serving the Lord Jesus Christ through it.  Strive with purpose, with a high aim, and with the will to excel in all you do...  Increase your knowledge of and love for the Master Carpenter.” Our prayers are with Bob’s loving family at this time, many of whom are alumni of Calvin Christian School.

If your child requires a Medical Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes, Epilepsy or any other significant medical condition please make sure the current version of this is supplied to the School Office on the Campus your child attends as soon as possible.

Consent2Go

Don’t forget to update your contact details and your child’s medical details using Consent2Go.  Information provided by parents ensures timely and accurate care for your child in the case of an emergency.  This program is also used to collect consent for excursions, camps and a variety of other school activities. Further information can be found on the Parents Page of the website.  Please contact the School Office if you require assistance. 

For our Secondary Students

SEQTA Learning Management System

Parents and Carers of new students to Calvin in Years 7-12 should connect to SEQTA Engage in order to access their child's course outlines, class content, assessments, feedback/marks, timetables and reports.

New Parents and Carers will need to create an account using the link that was emailed last week. You can also download the SEQTA Engage App via your preferred App Store.

School Immunisations - Years 7 and 10

The Kingborough Council’s immunisation team will be providing vaccinations to Years 7 and 10 students this year.  Students in these Year levels will receive a consent form that must be completed (even if your child will not be receiving the vaccines) and returned to the School Office on the Secondary Campus as soon as possible.

Learning, Assessment and Homework

Students from Years 7 to 12 at Calvin are expected to undertake regular homework outside of class time in order to consolidate learning, extend understanding, engage in reading and complete assessment tasks.  The Parents page of the website contains a number of academic policies that outline our expectations for homework and assessment, including the Homework Timetable and the Extension Request (Assessment Appeal Request) that must be completed in order to request an extension for assignments.  The Academic Assessment Policy and the AI guidelines are also important documents and they will be discussed with students during assembly in the coming weeks.  

Students may require access to our Learning Management System (SEQTA Learn) or other online sources to complete homework or assignments.  If devices or internet access are not available from home, students are welcome to work in the Calvin Library from 8.30am until 4.30pm from Monday to Thursday and until 4.00pm on Friday. 

Sailing

Calvin Christian School Sailing Club runs on Tuesday afternoons from 4-6pm at the Kingston Beach Sailing Club in Terms 1 and 4. Transport will be provided from Calvin to the Club. Parents will need to arrange pick up at 6pm. The cost for participation is $150 with the remaining cost subsidised by the School.  The Sailing Club commences in Week 2 for Term 1. Limited spaces are available so please register your interest with Mrs Kleywegt by emailing skleywegt@calvin.tas.edu.au.

Co-curricular

The Calvin Secondary Co-curricular program will commence in Week 3 this term.  Dates for Term 1 are 22 February, 7 March, 21 March and 4 April.  Students will be informed of the Co-curricular options and invited to select their preferences next week.   Please note that some options will involve a small cost and/or later return to school.

SATIS Sports

Calvin is part of the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (SATIS), an organisation where independent schools compete against each other in various sports. It is term based, meaning the sports rotate across school terms. In Term 1, students have the opportunity to play:

Boys - Basketball (Tuesday afternoon for seniors, Wednesday for Years 9 and 10, Thursday for Years 7 and 8)

Girls - Soccer on (Tuesday for Years 9 and10, Wednesday for Years 7 and 8).

Games are played after school at various schools and sport centres around Hobart. Calvin pay for all registration, hire and umpiring costs, meaning it is free for students to play.

Students or parents need to let Mr Bosker know they would like to play before Wednesday 14 February.

Help Needed

Many senior students have put their hand up for coaching roles, displaying the growing sense of community that students experience at Calvin. However, we still need some help in coaching and on the scorebench.

We also need your help in getting students to and from the games, either by your own personal vehicle or through car pooling.

School Activities

School Prayer Group

Each Thursday morning at 8.30am a group of parents and staff meet in the Principal’s Office to pray for our school and our community. They would love to welcome more people to the group. It doesn’t need to be a weekly commitment, just turn up when you can.

Student Data Collection Notice

Each year the Australian government collects data regarding your child and their enrolment. This data is used to inform Commonwealth school education policy, and to help ensure that Commonwealth funding arrangements for non-government schools are based on need, and are fair and transparent.

Our school provides this data to the Department of Education, Skills and Employment automatically, but is required to inform you that this will occur. You can read more about this process or contact us if you have any questions.
