Monday 8 December

As we head into our final weeks of school for the year, I hope this newsletter finds you full of anticipation for the celebrations and holidays to come. I would like to add my congratulations and farewell to our graduating Year 12 students, many of whom I was privileged to walk beside as they made significant decisions about their next steps in work and education. I know they’re well prepared to enter the big wide world, and I wish them all the very best for their future lives and careers.

This has been a busy time for our Year 10 students, who finished their time at school for the year with a Careers Day in the Multi Purpose Hall. We heard from a series of guests, some local and some from interstate, who led us through workshops dedicated to job readiness, personal attributes, values and career design. This was immediately followed by their Work Experience Week, which saw students working all over Hobart and further afield on farms, construction sites and boats, in schools, workshops, clinics and warehouses. Congratulations must go to Year 10 for such an incredible effort in finding and completing their Work Experience placements. I have been so encouraged by their persistence and hard work. It’s not too early for our Year 9 students to begin looking for Work Experience Week in 2026, as many popular placements are set aside and filled early.

On a personal note, may I say how grateful I am for the warm and enthusiastic response I have had in my first year as Pathways Coordinator at Calvin, from parents, students and staff. It has been such a rewarding space in which to work and I have loved the opportunity to play a small role in equipping and guiding students as they consider the broader questions that will shape their future lives.

Merry Christmas and God bless,

Alison Wright – Pathways Coordinator

More Information

Our Careers Day event saw Year 10 exploring their values, hearing from employers, and writing a personal elevator pitch. Work Experience saw them trying out a whole range of new activities in their various workplaces. From working on helicopters to designing buildings, from helping members of the community to conducting research, they have attempted all sorts of work-based learning activities that would not be possible without the generous support of host employers.

As we approach the end of the year, I wish you all a refreshing and enjoyable school holiday break. I will return to work on 2 February 2026 and will be available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9.00am to 4.00pm. If you would like to arrange a time to meet, please book an appointment here or contact me by email at awright@calvin.tas.edu.au. I look forward to connecting with you.
