Partnership in Action

How well do you know your child’s teacher (or teachers)? Do you know their name?  When was the last conversation you had with a teacher about your child’s education?

Sometimes it is easy to feel as though our responsibilities as parents stop at the school gate. We’ve put them in uniform, given them a packed lunch, and sent them off for the day – phew! For some of our children, that is exactly the way that they would like it, keeping their two worlds (home and school) very deliberately apart. 

With our parent-teacher interviews scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday this is a perfect opportunity to establish or cement your relationship with your child’s teachers. Being there is an important step in engaging with your child’s education, it demonstrates to your child that you are interested in their learning. Asking a few key questions can open up opportunities for understanding and connection between teacher and student.

You might consider some of the following:

• What are you seeing from my child (in class, in relationships, in their work)?

• Where are they succeeding and what challenges are there?

• How can I support their learning and how can we be working together?

Finally, don’t underestimate the power and value of prayer. Praying for our children is something we perhaps do instinctively as parents. Inviting God to give us wisdom as we parent opens us to engage with others and explore the best options for our young people.
