Experiential Learning at Calvin
Moving beyond the ‘four walls’ of the classroom and into the environment around us is an incredible way our students can extend their learning. Meeting personal challenges in an outdoor environment provides scope for student growth that is unlike anything that they will encounter in the classroom.
From the Primary years through to Senior Secondary, Calvin has a progressive Experiential Learning Program providing age-appropriate challenge and skill development. Connecting with our Outdoor Education Program in Years 10–12, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program from Years 9–12, and our camp experiences from Years 3–12, our Experiential Learning Program incorporates structure and rigour for students, with an exciting and challenging Year 9 program, 'Discover', which serves as a foundation for ongoing challenge and growth.

Since 2008, Calvin Christian School students have been involved in regular service-learning trips in support of partners in neighbouring developing countries. Students engage with local communities, schools and churches to build connections, broaden perspectives, support local initiatives, and see faith in action.
The Discover Program
Using the outdoors to build character, community, and a deeper understanding of faith.
Discover is a unique, compulsory Year 9 program designed to help students explore their own identity, deepen their faith, and build strong relationships. Through engaging weekly lessons, community service, and transformative camps, students are encouraged to grow spiritually, emotionally, and socially.
Lessons often take place outdoors, away from traditional classrooms, with activities focused on critical thinking, reflection, and respectful discussions. Students tackle important life topics and learn the value of trust, support, and community.
Discover is about preparing students to better understand themselves, each other, and God’s creation, inspired by the way Jesus taught his disciples.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award
An internationally-recognised award that provides students the opportunity to set and attain personal goals, to identify personal challenges, and to be recognised for their efforts.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is another way that Calvin Christian School can support your child's growth. It also provides recognition that reflects well on a CV and contributes points towards a student's Tasmanian Certificate of Education.
Students at Calvin can join the Award from Year 9 as part of our Discover Program or can explore it through Outdoor Experiences in Year 10, Outdoor Education in Year 11 and 12 or simply pursue it in their own time.
Students must set goals in the areas of Service, Physical Recreation, Skill and An Adventurous Journey, culminating in a recognition at Bronze, Silver or Gold level.

Outdoor Learning
Outdoor Experiences
Outdoor Experiences is an exciting elective available to Year 10 students who want adventure and personal growth. The course includes practical activities like bushwalking, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and more.
Weekly practical sessions take place in the Kingborough region during regular school hours, giving students hands-on experience while building core outdoor skills.
The focus is on developing resilience, character, and teamwork skills while exploring Tasmania’s beautiful outdoors. Students grow spiritually and personally, supported by experienced teachers.
This course lays the groundwork for Outdoor Education in Year 11 and 12, which significantly extends the skills and experiences introduced in Outdoor Experiences. Students who continue into the senior course will build on these foundations in deeper, more challenging ways, carrying these valuable skills with them for life.
Outdoor Education (TASC2)
Outdoor Education is designed for Year 11 and 12 students who enjoy practical learning and personal development through adventure activities. Students develop high level skills in whitewater kayaking, rafting, surfing, mountain biking, rock climbing, snow and navigation skills. Extended weekly practicals occur in the greater Hobart region.
The course helps students develop personal resilience, relationship-building skills, and respect for the natural environment. It prepares students well for further leadership opportunities in Year 12 and beyond.
Outdoor Education complements academic studies and supports students in developing lifelong skills and character strengths that employers and universities value highly.
Outdoor Leadership (TASC3)
Outdoor Leadership equips Year 11 and 12 students with essential skills to effectively lead groups in outdoor adventure activities. Students learn practical leadership skills through both theory and hands-on experience.
Topics covered include leadership strategies, group management, decision-making, ecological sustainability, and understanding the relationship between people and nature. Students put their knowledge into action by planning and leading outdoor experiences for their peers.
This course fosters strong, Christ-like leaders who are confident, capable, and ready for leadership roles in various fields including education, management, recreation, and community service.

Physical Education
Health and Physical Education is a compulsory subject for all students in Years 7 to 10, focused on skill development, fitness, and an understanding of the value of physical activity. Across a variety of sports, students learn rules, build confidence, and work on personal fitness in a supportive environment.
The goal is to prepare students for life beyond school. When they are invited to join a social team or stay active on their own, they have the ability and confidence to say yes. With rising health concerns in Australia, P.E. helps students build habits that promote both physical and mental wellbeing for the long term.
