Learning Support for Students with Diverse Needs
At Calvin Christian School, we provide an inclusive, evidence-informed learning support model for students with diverse needs, ensuring all students can access learning, participate meaningfully, and achieve their potential.
We understand that every child learns differently, and we are committed to supporting each student to feel confident, capable, and included at school.
Our Learning Support program provides targeted academic, social, and emotional support to meet the diverse needs of students in Tasmania. We work collaboratively with teachers, families, and external professionals to deliver evidence-based interventions that build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and support meaningful participation in classroom learning.
Our approach includes:
Structured literacy and numeracy intervention
Targeted small group and individual support
Classroom-based adjustments
Allied health collaboration
Wellbeing and therapeutic supports
Strong family partnerships
Our Learning Support program supports students with a range of learning and developmental needs, including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, specific learning disorders, speech and language impairments, anxiety-related needs, and sensory processing differences. We provide tailored strategies and resources to support students at school and at home, and work closely with families and external professionals to ensure coordinated, individualised support. Referrals can be made through classroom teachers, the Learning Support Coordinator, or the wellbeing team.

Will my child have an individual learning plan?
At Calvin, students with identified learning needs may have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) developed in collaboration with teachers, families, and the Learning Support team. These plans outline specific learning goals, classroom adjustments, and support strategies to ensure each student can access the curriculum and make meaningful progress.
Do teachers receive training in neurodiversity?
Yes. Our staff engage in ongoing professional learning to build understanding of neurodiversity, including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and specific learning disorders. This training supports teachers to implement inclusive, evidence-informed strategies that meet the diverse needs of students in the classroom.
How are sensory needs supported in the classroom?
We aim to create learning environments that are supportive of sensory needs. This may include adjustments such as flexible seating, movement breaks, reduced sensory load, access to quiet spaces, and the use of personalised strategies recommended through Learning Support or external professionals.
What happens if my child becomes overwhelmed in the classroom?
If a student becomes overwhelmed, staff use calm, supportive strategies to help them regulate and feel safe. This may include providing a short break, moving to a quieter space, or using agreed calming strategies. Our focus is always on supporting the student to return to learning when they are ready.
Who will be my main point of contact?
Your main point of contact will usually be your child’s classroom teacher. For students receiving additional support, the Learning Support Coordinator may also be involved. We value strong communication with families and encourage regular contact so support can be consistent between home and school.
