Hope for Their Future

How do we think about ourselves in the future when the world is changing so rapidly and the future so uncertain?

It’s a question so many of us grapple with as we teach, parent and nurture the young people in our care. Stepping into the role of Pathways Coordinator at Calvin this year, it is a constant conversation I am having with both myself and the students. Along with so many other aspects of life, the world of work seems to change so rapidly that preparations for life after school may seem daunting and futile. Our young people will face career challenges that previous generations may never have known, and many that are yet to reveal themselves.

Next week, students in Year 10 from Calvin and Emmanuel will attend our Subject Selection Expo, taking another small step in their journey. As they compare the many subjects they can study here at Calvin and the different pathways open to them, I pray that above all they will know a sense of hope for their future.

As parents and caregivers, we warmly invite you to take part in the conversation and partner with us in supporting your child through this transition. Next Thursday June 19 we will be holding an information evening for parents and students from Years 9 and 10 in the Calvin Senior Campus Library from 6.30pm. Come and hear from our Head of Year 11 and 12, Jane Morrison and myself as we shed light on the TASC system, the points and ticks needed for a TCE, the process for university entrance and alternative pathways such as school based apprenticeships, traineeships and VET courses. Hear from current Year 11 and 12 students on their experience of Calvin Senior Secondary and the difference Calvin staff have made to their studies. There will be hot drinks available, and an opportunity to ask questions about the process and the subjects on offer at Calvin.

Following on from this event, it will be my privilege over the coming weeks to meet with our current Year 10 students to support them as they make choices and plan their pathways forward into the future. Parents and carers are invited to join in these conversations and to navigate their child’s journey alongside them. I consider it a great honour to have conversations with each student individually and I look forward to supporting them as they reflect on themselves, their interests, hopes and next steps.

As the Proverb tells us, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." (16:9)
